Health Benefits of Wild Blue Green Algae

“Klamath Algae (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae) AFA, an unicellular micro-algae living in the Klamath freshwater lake (USA), presents a very complete nutritional profile, with a very high bioavailability level: 20 amino acids, more than 60 minerals and trace elements, 14 vitamins, 15 carotenoids, chlorophyll, beta-carotenes, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and algae specific molecules such as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) [algae mycosporins], AFA-phycocynanins (AFA-PCs), beta-phenylethylamin (PEA).” - KLAMATH ALGAE AND ITS NUTRITIONAL PROPERTIES. A SPECIFIC EXTRACT WITH THE NEUROMODULATING AND NEUROPROTECTIVE EFFECTS by F. Joanny Menvielle-Bourg, A. Vitacca, S. Scoglio - Phytotherapie (2011)9:165-171

Klamath's Best Wild Blue Green Algae is unique among all food grade algaes in that it also metabolizes molecular nitrogen directly from the air to produce proteins and other nitrogen containing bio-molecules.

Although health benefits of AFA have been reported for more than two decades, it is only recently that science has fully explained the mechanisms by which AFA acts on the body.

The following are a few of the most notable benefits attributed to AFA:

  • Stimulates the release of stem cells from the bone marrow and, therefore, stands as an unequaled natural product for regeneration and healing.
  • The greatest value of A.F.A. is not only its nutrient concentration, but its effect on the nervous system, specifically the pituitary, pineal, and hypothalamus glands.
  • Supports a healthy digestive system by improving the healthy intestinal bacteria
  • Helps maintain normal cholesterol levels
  • It is a potent anti-oxidant.
  • Stimulates the migration of natural killer cells, a type of lymphocyte involved in eliminating cancerous and virally infected cells, offering powerful immune support
  • An excellent source of highly bioavailable Omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoids and chlorophyll which promotes a healthy heart and benefits the treatment of ADD
  • Contains phycocyanin, the blue pigment, which helps prevent inflammation and pain and protect the body against heavy metal toxicity and pesticides
  • Significant source of phenylethylamine (PEA), known to increase mental alertness, concentration, elevate mood and alleviate depression and symptoms of ADD. PEA increases the activity of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) in parts of the brain that control our ability to pay attention and stay alert.
  • Rich source of vitamins and minerals and micronutrients in a convenient form.
  • 98% absorption at a cellular level.
  • Crosses the blood/brain barrier and thereby supplies essential nutrition to the brain.

KLAMATH’S BEST® FOR SPORTSMEN/WOMEN
AFA is an all natural way to boosts physical and mental energy without caffeine, chemicals, or sugar. The following benefits can be expected:

  • Endurance levels increase substantially
  • Biomodulates physical wellness for overall energy and performance
  • Stamina improves
  • Mental focus improves,
  • Energy levels are maintained because AFA is immediately absorbed (even from   under the tongue) and releases nutrients with minimal digestive process required
  • Recovery time happens much faster because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

KLAMATH’S BEST® FOR VEGETARIANS AND VEGANS
Vitamin B12 is a critical nutrient that is often inadequate in a plant-based (vegan) diet, thus the inclusion of a reliable vitamin B12 source in a vegan diet is recommended as essential.

Unfortunately, many natural sources of vitamin B12 have been proven to be inadequate for human supplementation.

AFA algae is exceptionally rich in bioavailable iron. When one switches to a vegetarian diet, the iron normally acquired from blood sources (meat) must be drawn from plants, which may be challenging to some individuals. This is where KLAMATH’S BEST® AFA can help. AFA is an exceptional source of iron, which works with AFA’s manganese, copper, B vitamins and vitamin C to fight anaemia especially in vegetarians who are adapting to non-blood (nonheme) iron sources in plants.

In research conducted by Italy’s Department of Neurorehabilitation at Villa Salus Hospital the study evaluated the vitamin B12 levels of 15 vegan subjects who had supplemented with an algae product from Lake Klamath and found their B12 levels increased over a control group.

Gram for gram, AFA is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, a close second only to spirulina. Both have high human-active B-12 concentrations, but AFA has about seven times more B-12 per gram than spirulina.

The AFA human-active B-12 amount in one gram equals the daily B-12 requirement for most people.

KLAMATH’S BEST® FOR THE ELDERLY
A very important aspect of the ageing process is the progressive slowing down of the intellectual faculties, together with a reduction of the activity and energy levels and a worsening of mood and mental alertness.

In fact, generally these are the very symptoms perceived by the individual as the primary indication of one’s ageing, and the ones that create the most suffering. This seems deeply related with a physiological phenomenon typical of old age, namely the modification in the dopamine and MAO enzymes metabolism.

It is in fact known that dopamine on average decreases 13% every 10 years after age 40; while monoamineoxidase-B (MAO-B) enzymes increase approximately 250% after age 50.

Substances capable of counteracting this trend seem thus potentially very useful in the battle for better and slower ageing. Dr Stefano Scoglio (Director of the Nutritherapy Research Centre, at the University of Urbino, Italy) focused his research on AFA Klamath algae and found that it may be the most powerful substance capable of both physiologically inhibiting MAO-B enzymes, and of supporting the production and metabolism of the neurotransmitter dopamine, as well as of its cascade.

MENOPAUSE
In his clinical studies, Dr Scoglio used a concentrated extract of Klamath algae known as Klamin which contains approximately 15mg for gram of PEA. Dr Scoglio has carried out a study, to be published in Gynecological Endocrinology, upon 20 women with typical menopausal symptoms such as mood swings, depression, anxiety and lack of self-esteem.

There were statistically significant results, with improvements ranging from 30% to 40% in the specific measuring scales for depression, anxiety and self-esteem. Furthermore, they all reported a significant increase of their general well-being and energy levels. As oestrogen levels fall at the menopause there is a parallel change in the level of neurotransmitters (dopamine and serotonin decrease, whilst noradrenaline increase) which causes many of the menopausal symptoms. The subsequent mood disorders, memory loss and reduced libido are all linked to the fall in dopamine.

BRAIN FUNCTION
AFA contains about 3% nucleic acids, the richest of any commercially available food. Nucleic acids are responsible for growth and repair, unscheduled regeneration; and can prevent, stop, and reverse many aspects of ageing; enhance immunity, neutralize radiation poisoning, stimulate the return of memory, reverse organic brain disorders and genetic damage; and act as stress modulators.(Blue Green Algae and the Factors of Regeneration, Apsley, 1995)

The natural antioxidants in AFA – known as AFA phycocyanins provide a significant degree of neuroprotection. This is important because oxidative damage caused by emotional, nutritional and environmental stress is at the root of the progressive development of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and are also a feature of mood disorders such as depression.

Also as we age, dopamine concentrations in our bodies decreases 12% every 10 years after age 45, whilst MAO-B enzyme activity on the hypothalamus of individuals over 50 years and older is about 2.5 greater than younger individuals

KLAMATH’S BEST® FOR WEIGHT LOSS
AFA’s high nutrient content and low calorie count (4 calories per gram) make it compatible with all weight-loss programmes. It is also a valuable detoxifier, increases energy making exercise more attractive, improves mood and general overall health.
